At a film market, a buyer from another country watches five minutes of footage from a film still in the edit. By the end of the day the sales agent has agreed a price for the rights in that country, and the producer can show the deal to the bank as part of the financing. The sales agent is the company that sells a film to distributors around the world.

What a sales agent does

A sales agent represents a film in markets where the producer has no direct contacts. Often the agent comes on board during financing. They estimate what the film could earn in each country, and those estimates help the producer raise money. Some deals are signed before the film is made, called pre-sales, and a bank may lend against them.

Once the film is finished, the agent presents it at film markets and festivals, negotiates deals with distributors for each country or region, and collects the payments. They also make sure the producer delivers the right materials, such as the film files, subtitles, music cue sheets and legal paperwork. The agent takes a commission on each sale and recovers agreed marketing costs.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the film's sales potential and give estimates per country
  • Advise on cast, title and length when it affects sales
  • Make pre-sales during financing
  • Prepare trailers, posters and marketing material for buyers
  • Present the film at markets and festivals
  • Negotiate and sign deals with distributors and platforms
  • Check delivery materials and collect payments for the producer

How the role touches the budget

Indirectly, but with weight. The agent's estimates and pre-sales help decide how big the budget can be. The delivery items the agent requires, such as subtitled versions or extra documents, are lines in the production budget and are often underestimated. The agent's commission and costs come out of the sales income, not the production budget.

How people become sales agents

Many start as assistants in a sales company or at a distributor, learning the buyers and the markets. Others come from festival programming, acquisitions or production. Relationships with buyers in many countries take years to build, which is why the trade is small and personal.

At a distribution company

Some companies combine international sales with their own distribution in one or two home markets. In TV, the same work is done by the sales arm of a production company or broadcaster that sells formats and finished programmes abroad.
